The superlatives that describe the sport of lacrosse, both as a player and a fan, hit on everything we here at isplack think a sport should be all about. Watch a lacrosse game and you instantly appreciate the athletes on the field (or the floor in indoor/box lacrosse). The physicality of the game, the endurance and strength required of the players, and the skill it takes to overcome the opponent are enduring values of the sport. It’s no wonder lacrosse has grown from a mostly east coast sport to a nationally loved sport thanks to modern technology and exposure to the game at its top levels.
A sport with Native American origins goes back as far as New York in the 1600’s and Canada in the 1700’s. The first Lacrosse club was formed in Montreal in the mid-1800’s. A game similar to hockey, which also had its first club created in Canada, Lacrosse mostly along the Atlantic coast for the majority of the 20th century. However, few sports have undergone a surge like the one lacrosse has seen in the last 20 years.
In 2015, isplack had some Colorado pride when Denver University won the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. In winning, DU became the first NCAA men’s lacrosse champion from outside the Eastern Time Zone. The DU emergence came as no surprise to us, as young athletes from all over the country love connecting to a sport that identifies so purely with athleticism, unity, toughness and speed. The toughness of the East Coast, has spread across the country with the sport, while the athleticism that players from every corner of the region display has allowed lacrosse to grow in droves.
According to US Lacrosse, the sport has been one of the fastest growing sports for participation in the country. The sport has two prominent leagues, the indoor National Lacrosse League (NLL) and the outdoor Major League Lacrosse (MLL). NCAA Lacrosse for men and women has gained in popularity as well, and always look forward to Memorial Day weekend for the annual Men’s Final Four.
Lacrosse athletes from all over the country are utilizing isplack eye black and face paint to unite as a team and get their game faces on. The toughness of the sport is something we instantly connect with, and the colors of our custom eye black allow each team an additional way to show their team pride.
